Nurses use and encounter technology in nearly every aspect of their profesional practice. What does it mean to be technologically competent and caring as a nurse? How does technology support nursing work? How does it hinder nursing work? How can nurses care for theory patients as technological advancements are introduced nearly everyday? Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing: A Model for Practice provides insight and answers into how nurses can express their technological competency as caring in nursing, thereby providing meaningful and essential nursing care.

"[This book] speaks against thinking [that] we can only understand nursing from a traditional, logical, empirical approach, suggesting we need a contemporary process for exploring nursing. I can't agree more."

--Journal of Christian Nursing

"Nurse scholars from across the globe contribute essays to this unique philosophical exploration of today's nursingÖ.This book presents an emerging view that requires nursing to look at its work through a broader and less structured lens. Challenging the structure of the traditional nursing process, the book considers nursing as reflective and thoughtful."

--Doody's

A Contemporary Nursing Process re-envisions the practice of nursing by configuring caring in terms of the person the nurse cares for. Locsin and Purnell stress the importance of knowing the patient, and differentiating the person from the disease. This text addresses this highly relevant issue, and provides a wealth of insight on how to care for the patient on a personal level, while still professionally administering clinical treatment. Chapters discuss:

How to appreciate persons as participants in their care, rather than as objects of care

The ideal of care versus the practical demands of care

Technological advancements shaping human life and nursing

The consequences of "not knowing" the patient on a personal level

This collection provides a comprehensive review of the issues surrounding the rapidly emerging field of technology, which nurses face both within the hospital and in the wider community. It challenges readers to rethink contemporary health care, globalization in health care, and health care dependency on technology, while arguing that there must be a harmonious coexistence of technology and caring in nursing.

Alan Barnard (Editor), Rozzano C. Locsin (Series Editor)

Technology and Nursing Practice explains and critically engages with the practice implications of technology for nursing. It takes a broad view of technology, covering not only health informatics, but also 'tele-nursing' and the use of equipment in clinical practice.

In this book, past research influencing human-to-human and human-to-robot relationships involving robot artificial super-intelligence are presented to aid in adopting appropriate technologies to meet the demands of future endeavors in health care.cooperative undertakings with various interdisciplinary activities among human nurses and humanoid nursing robots will be a prospective visioning seen and realized from the perspective of japanese human caring ideas for an aging society.

The first edition of this book was focused on the care of older persons. However, this revised edition has increased its scope with a wider horizon of content, including other age groups and healthcare situations, newer and more sophisticated technologies. Also, the revised edition provides a "window" to future advances in the care of persons using robots and the primacy of robotics in human health and well-being.

The Editors of the book believe that interactive communication, in which older persons interact with humans or with humanoid robot, is one of the most effective caring ways to prevent dementia in older people. This provides the impetus for HCRs to be programmed to demonstrate respectful, compassionate, and person-centered care.

In this revised edition, updated research findings since the first edition are shared, creating a more relevant, robust, and enhanced content for the care of persons, including older persons. This revised edition is divided into chapters, which are clustered according to the themes of the four major parts.

PART 01 Aging Population and Robotic Technology

One of the challenges is to put robotic technology to practical use in nursing. An important part of this process is to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of robot technology in caring for older people.

PART 02 Potential Developmental Issues

The future of nursing in Western and other wealthy countries is predicted to be linked strongly with automated robotics for efficient and cost-effective care. What distinctive characteristics should humanoid health care robots possess, considering nursing care practice?

PART 03 New Middle-Range Nursing Theories and Research Methods

The TRETON as a middle-range theory, grounding the process of nursing as a technological and mutual engagement in nursing encounters - interrelated events between healthcare robots and human persons occurring in human health care environments. The model for the intermediary role of nurses in transactive relationships with healthcare robots (MIRTH) describes its roles. Specific research designs that can guide researchers to conduct rigorous investigations on humans, the Intentional Observational Clinical Research Design (IOCRD) is explained.

PART 04 Nursing Robot and Robotics in Nursing

Humanoid healthcare robots (HHRs) need to be programmed to demonstrate respectful, compassionate, and person-centered care. This section states that history, definition, and the basic components of robots, and discuss the safety of robots and explanation of the safety measures of robots in both Japan and overseas.
